Google Maps will rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America” for users in the United States after an official update to the U.S. Geographic System, Reuters reported.
This change will be visible to users in the United States, while in Mexico, it will remain as the “Gulf of Mexico.”
Outside the U.S. and Mexico, users will see both names displayed.
Following Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Department of the Interior announced that the official name of the “Gulf of Mexico” had been changed to the “Gulf of America.”

Google Maps, owned by Alphabet Inc., will also rename Denali Mountain in Alaska back to Mount McKinley.
“As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America, and the highest peak in North America will once again carry the name Mount McKinley,” the Department of the Interior stated last week.
