Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro will spend the days until the start of his trial in a heavily secured facility in Brooklyn, New York.

Since the charges against him originate from New York, this allowed law enforcement authorities to place him in that facility.

The Metropolitan Detention Center, which once held the notorious cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán before he was sentenced to life imprisonment, also served as a temporary home for Sean “Diddy” Combs, Ghislaine Maxwell, R. Kelly, and Sam Bankman-Fried.

Although this detention facility is specially equipped to house high-risk detainees, it is also the only federal detention center for the largest city in the United States, after the Bureau of Prisons closed the Manhattan complex following the suicide of Jeffrey Epstein in that jail — an event that drew public attention to numerous problems at the facility.

Several years ago, special measures were introduced at the facility to accommodate El Chapo, who had previously managed to escape from prison in Mexico. The co-founder of his Sinaloa cartel, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García, was also held at this detention center before pleading guilty to related charges.

However, as CNN writes, the United States risks holding the president of another country in such a densely populated metropolitan area, which carries a range of security issues that go beyond the safety of the inmate and detention staff themselves.
