The green arched structure of Belgrade’s Old Sava Bridge was removed in the morning hours from its foundation on the Sava River, where it had stood for the past 83 years. After the central part of the bridge, its two supporting pillars will also be removed.
The recognizable green arch was lifted from its pillars and moved by hydraulic cranes onto barges, which should then remove it from the riverbed, an RFE reporter stated.
For the purpose of the final works on the bridge’s removal, the Sava River has been partially closed to navigation.
There is still no official information on what will happen to the remains of the old bridge. City authorities previously announced that a new bridge would be built in its place.

Despite the opposition of some Belgrade citizens and years of delays, the Old Sava Bridge was closed to traffic on November 1, 2024, and work on its removal has been ongoing since April of this year.
Citizens and activists from the initiatives “Belgrade Stays” and “The Bridge Stays,” who protested for months against the demolition of the Old Sava Bridge, held a protest gathering near the construction site on the Sava bank the previous day. On that occasion, they called on the Mayor of Belgrade, Aleksandar Šapić, to provide documents regarding the relocation of the bridge and the construction of a new one, but he did not appear.
In recent years, the Old Sava Bridge found itself in the middle of the residential and commercial project “Belgrade Waterfront,” which is promoted by the authorities.
Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Šapić, an official of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, has repeatedly stated that the Old Sava Bridge is unsafe, old, and hindering the development of the Serbian capital.
