The German newspaper Bild has reported that there is significant concern in many parts of Europe over ongoing negotiations between the United States and Russia, as well as the possibility of U.S. troop withdrawals from several regions of Europe, including Kosovo, according to Reporteri.
“Italy is preparing for the possible withdrawal of American troops from Kosovo. This would leave European allies alone in the Balkans against Putin’s friend, Aleksandar Vučić, and his powerful Serbian army,” the article stated today.
According to German media, Western security services and politicians fear that negotiations, which began on Tuesday in Riyadh, could lead to the end of the U.S. military presence in large parts of Europe.
NATO Withdrawal and Russian Threats
An Eastern European security official told German media:
“According to our information, this is about Putin’s demands from 2021—namely, the withdrawal of U.S. troops from all NATO countries that joined the alliance after 1990.”
The worst-case scenario, feared by many experts, involves a direct Russian military invasion of former Soviet republics Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, as well as a full-scale war with Poland.
“Putin wants NATO to withdraw from the entire former Soviet empire.”
The presence of U.S. troops in regions near Russia is seen as the biggest guarantee of independence for these countries, according to consensus among Russia’s neighboring states, the report continues.
The article also references a report from the Financial Times, which states that “Putin wants NATO troops to withdraw from the entire former Soviet empire.”
Trump’s Potential Withdrawal and EU’s Defense Concerns
European officials believe that it is highly likely Trump will agree to withdraw U.S. troops from the Baltic region, and possibly even further west. This would leave the European Union defenseless against the Russian military.
According to Bild, the only U.S. bases not currently under discussion are those in Ramstein, Germany, and air force bases in the UK. The rest of Europe must prepare for major changes if Trump and Putin reach an agreement, the article concludes.
