Serbs in Chicago finally have their own candidate for a political office! Last night, a fundraising event was held in Chicago to support the election of Slobodan Bodo Jokić for the position of Highway Commissioner in the Chicago suburb of Maine Township.
Slobodan Bodo Jokić is a businessman and a respected member of the Serbian community. He has been active in politics for eight years as a member of the Republican Party and its chairman for Maine Township.
“I am Slobodan Bodo Jokić, living in Park Ridge with my wife and four children, and I am very excited and happy to have their and your support on this journey. I was born in Serbia and came here after earning my degree in education. My first years in America were spent working in the transportation business, achieving the American dream by founding my own company. Now that I have achieved that dream, I want to give back by serving my community, my neighbors, and my family,” Jokić stated in his address to friends, business partners, party colleagues, and many members of the Serbian community who came to support him.
He thus becomes the first Serbian candidate for a political position in this part of the U.S. in a long time, since the era of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.
He faces a tough challenge as a Republican in Chicago and Illinois, known as strongholds of the Democratic Party.

However, Jokić sees his opportunity in the large Serbian and Balkan community residing in areas such as Park Ridge, Des Plaines, Niles, and Mount Prospect.
“I believe that these people share the same values as I do, as hardworking, family-oriented individuals, and I urge them to vote for me. I promise to fight for their interests from day one,” emphasized Slobodan Bodo Jokić, reminding everyone that the election is on April 1, with early voting starting a few weeks prior.
When asked why Serbs rarely engage in American political life, he shared an interesting observation, which you can watch in our on-site report, along with a survey and reactions from Serbs and Americans to his campaign promises…
