Following the tragic collapse of the canopy in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people, eleven individuals have been arrested. The suspects are charged with criminal acts of endangering public safety and improper execution of construction works. The prescribed prison sentences for these crimes range from 2 to 12 years.

Among those arrested are Nebojša Šurlan, former director of “Infrastruktura železnice,” and Jelena Tanasković, who was until recently the director of “Infrastruktura železnice,” it was confirmed to Nova.rs. Goran Vesić, who was initially reported as arrested, has denied the news.

“Regarding the tragic event that took place on November 1, 2024, in Novi Sad, when the canopy of the Novi Sad Railway Station collapsed, resulting in the deaths of fifteen people and the life-threatening injury of two individuals, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad informs the public that, after gathering and thoroughly analyzing all necessary documentation, conducting interviews with many citizens, and after the expert analysis aimed at determining the cause and circumstances of the collapse, which was submitted to the prosecutor’s office on November 20, 2024, and after reviewing the findings and opinions of construction experts, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad, on November 21, 2024, ordered the arrest and detention of eleven individuals. They are suspected: J.T., G.V., A.D., and N.Š. of committing the criminal offense of Endangering Public Safety in connection with the criminal offense of Creating Public Danger, and suspects: S.N., M.J., Lj.M.M., M.S., D.J., M.G., and D.T. of committing the criminal offense of Endangering Public Safety in connection with the criminal offense of Improper and Irregular Execution of Construction Works. The prescribed prison sentence for these crimes is between 2 and 12 years,” the statement reads.

To recall, those who tragically lost their lives in the Novi Sad incident include Anja Radonjić (24) from Paraćin, Nemanja Komar (17) from Stepanovićevo, Anđela Ruman (20) from Stara Pazova, Đorđe Firić (53) from Kovilj and his two granddaughters Sara (6) and Valentina (9), Milica Adamović (16) from Kać, Mileva Karanović (76) also from Kać, Sanja Arbutina Ćirić (35) from Kać, Stevan Hrka (27) from Belgrade, Miloš Milosavljević (21) from Knićanin, Đuro Švonja (77) from Stepanovićevo, Vukašin Raković (68) from Bukovac, North Macedonian citizen Vasko Sazdovski (45) from Skopje, and Goranka Raca (58) from Novi Sad.
